Lucerne is the city most visitors picture when they imagine Switzerland: a medieval old town wrapped around a river mouth, a covered wooden bridge crossing it, and mountains rising directly out of the lake behind. It sits at the head of Lake Lucerne, one of the most beautiful stretches of water in the country, with the jagged mass of Mount Pilatus watching over it. The combination of walkable town and dramatic mountain makes it one of the most rewarding day trips in central Switzerland.
The old town and the Chapel Bridge
The Kapellbrücke, or Chapel Bridge, is the emblem of the city: a covered wooden footbridge dating to the fourteenth century, running diagonally across the river Reuss with a stone water tower beside it. Inside its gable, a series of painted panels tells the history of the town. It is the oldest covered bridge in Europe and, at the right hour, still one of the quietest places in the centre.
The old town on the north bank is a compact grid of painted façades, fountains and car-free squares, easy to wander without a plan. A short walk away stands the Lion Monument, a dying lion carved into a rock face that Mark Twain called the saddest and most moving piece of stone in the world.
Up Mount Pilatus
Pilatus rises to just over 2,100 metres directly above the lake, and local legend once held that a dragon lived on its slopes. There are two classic ways up: the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, which climbs from Alpnachstad at a gradient that feels almost vertical, and the cable car and aerial gondola from Kriens on the edge of the city.
The most satisfying route combines the two, going up one way and down the other, with a boat across the lake to link them, a journey marketed as the Golden Round Trip. From the summit terraces the view takes in the lake, the city, and a horizon of Alpine peaks stretching into the distance.
A calm way to arrive
Lucerne is around two and a half to three hours by road from the Lake Geneva region, which makes it a comfortable full-day excursion rather than a rush. The mountain railways and lake steamers reward an early start, before the midday arrivals fill the old town.
